Yoga Nidra 5 qualities
The practioner of Yoga Nidra associates it with deep relaxation. In fact, a successful practice of Yoga Nidra brings the person to an unequaled state of relaxation. It is not surprising that Yoga Nidra is translated as “yogic dream.”
Practicing Yoga Nidra for one hour refreshes the body as deeply as three hours of regular sleep. Yoga nidra is an immensely powerful meditation technique, and one of the easiest yoga practices to develop and maintain. While the practitioner rests comfortably in savasana (corpse pose), this systematic meditation takes you through the pancha maya kosha (five layers of self), leaving you with a sense of wholeness. You no longer have to fear spending hours sitting on the ground waiting for release.
Pancha Maya Kosha: the 5 Koshas.
Each kosha, which in Sanskrit means sheath, represents a level of consciousness: the deepest, the most subtle and refined. The path to self-realization in yoga is nothing more than a journey through the 5 koshas to your true self and a union with divine consciousness.
All Koshas end in “maya,” which means “made of,” and they are Annayama, Pranayama, Manamaya, Vijnamaya, and Anandamaya.
Annamaya is the physical sheath, the real body, which depends on food (anna) for its nourishment. Since all the layers are connected, it is important to pay attention to the type of food you are feeding your Annamaya.
Pranayama, the second part of the physical body, is made up of the vital energy that flows through the body. It is also sometimes called “the energy or respiratory body.”
Manamaya, the first part of the mind, represents intellect, reason and memory. The practice of asanas and pranayama helps calm the mind.
Vijnamaya represents the subtlest area of the mind, what we sometimes call intuition and wisdom. When it develops enough, you start to experience unusual sensations in asanas, for example strength and power in tree pose.
Anandamaya – the final kosha – represents true spiritual bliss, your final destiny, unconditional love.
The concept of kosha helps us better understand the central idea of yoga – the alignment of the body and the mind. the balance between the body, the breath, the mind and the spirit.

The 5 qualities of developing your yoga nidra practice:
1. WE CAN ALL DO YOGA NIDRA
Intense vinyasa flows and long asanas are not for everyone. Yoga nidra, however, is a practice that everyone from children to seniors can do. It is easy to follow at any age. All your body needs to do is lie down on the floor. And even if you can’t lie on the floor, you can do this practice sitting down.
Yoga nidra… is a practice that everyone from children to seniors can do.
2. YOU CANNOT PRACTICE YOGA NIDRA INCORRECTLY
As you lie down, supported by savasana, all you have to do is follow the voice that is guiding you. You are likely to remember certain parts of the meditation and not others. Every time you come to the practice you find a new experience, all of them unique and beneficial. If you fall asleep, you will also receive benefits as the unconscious mind absorbs the practice.
3. YOGA NIDRA IS EASY TO INCORPORATE INTO YOUR DAILY LIFE
Sitting meditation can be frustrating – trying to clear your mind, bring awareness back to your breath, or find inspiration to focus. Yoga nidra is always guided, so there is no intense thought or wondering why you are staring at a blank wall. A yoga nidra practice can be as short as five minutes and as long as an hour. You choose the length. You may find that the easiest way to accommodate a yoga nidra practice is to make it part of your daily bedtime routine. With the headphones, practice directly in bed and then go to sleep. Although this is not the most conventional way to practice yoga nidra, you have no excuse not to do it if you are going to be lying down anyway.
4. IT’S AN EASY WAY TO REDUCE STRESS
Yoga nidra promotes deep rest and relaxation not found in your average meditation practice. The body scan and breath awareness stages can only be practiced to calm the nervous system, leading to less stress and better health.
5. YOGA NIDRA OFFERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF INTIMATELY
Some people crave the deep relaxation that this practice instills, while other practitioners use the safe and non-judgmental atmosphere that yoga nidra provides as a window into themselves. Yoga nidra offers a space to explore what you need in the moment, as well as an opportunity to work on releasing lasting emotions. During yoga nidra you can experience an emotion and come face to face with what you want to overcome, without “Immerse yourself in it” completely, that is, without feeling the emotion so completely that you overwhelm yourself. Over time you continue to experience the emotion and associated feelings, deepening the practice.
Yoga nidra offers a space to explore what you need in the moment, as well as an opportunity to work on releasing lasting emotions.
Yoga nidra can serve as a path to freedom without creating bodily stress. A samskara (mental groove) is formed by a repetitive thought or habit that deepens in the mind and body, creating a mental impression (groove) over time. These impressions can cause negative reactions and emotions that prevent the unification of the five layers (koshas) of oneself. If these negative emotions continue to plague you, the mental / emotional layer of the being is unable to integrate with the other layers: physical, energetic, higher wisdom, and bliss body. This is where yoga nidra can be especially helpful.
In SAMSKARA the prefix sam means “well planned, well thought out”, and kara means “the action taken”. Therefore, samskara means “the footprint, the impact of the action we carry out with full awareness of its goal.” When we perform such an action, a subtle imprint or impression is deposited in our mental field. Each time the action is repeated, the footprint becomes more marked, it becomes stronger. This is how you form a habit. The stronger the habit, the less control we have over our mind when we try to carry out an action that is contrary to it. We’ve all seen how habit patterns motivate our thoughts, words, and actions in subtle but powerful ways.
When our habit patterns become so ingrained that they alter our body chemistry, we call them addiction. When they become strong enough to alter our thought process, we call them samskara. At this stage we no longer remember when or how the process began. And without introspection or recollection, we cannot discover the place in the mind where these samskaras are stored. When our mental world is totally under the influence of these powerful traces, they become the determining factors of our personality and, due to these samskaras, we perceive this world in the way we are used to.
The content of our mind colors our perception of ourselves and of others. When even our discriminating power (the intellect) is “colored” and we spontaneously and effortlessly think, speak and act in accordance with these colored perceptions, then samskaras become vasanas (literally, “color” or “coloring agent”). . From here on, we have no choice but to view ourselves and the world according to these powerful impressions generated by our past acts.
Thus, you can clearly see that these samskaras and vasanas are our own creation. If we indulge in inertia and make no effort to discover an alternative, then these subtle traces of our past actions will have the force of destiny. For those who lack confidence and self-assurance, destiny cannot be altered. However, if destiny really were unchangeable, why would we bother to do something for our lives? It is only because fate can be altered that swamis, pundits, gurus, priests, astrologers, and palmists exist.
Finally, the initial question seems to be motivated by the belief that all samskaras are negative. This is not true. Good actions create positive samskaras, bad actions create negative samskaras. In life’s long journey, we have performed all kinds of actions: right and wrong, good and bad. Our mind is a repository of positive and negative samskaras, it is up to us to exercise or not our willpower and determination to strengthen or eliminate some of them.

A samskara can be used as an intention within the practice of yoga nidra. You could go into practice knowing what you would like to work on.
Do you want to emphasize eliminating negative samskaras or do you prefer to nurture your mind by creating positive samskaras?
The intention, often motivated by the teacher, is set at the beginning of the practice. When a samskara arises during practice, you can touch the feelings that arise and then allow yourself to experience these feelings more and more. By working with this method (and feeling safe throughout the journey), with each subsequent practice you dive deeper into a samskara, you can better understand your reaction, and can ultimately allow samskara to be released into the ocean of freedom. awareness. At that point, it is no longer a deep impression. You are liberated from that samskara!
Yoga nidra is an accessible meditation practice that focuses on cultivating multiple levels of well-being. Practiced with consistency and awareness, you will likely find that you can find a good amount of peace in a short amount of time.
Yoga Nidra by Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati - listen hereYoga Nidra Script
The following is a long and indepth complete yoga nidra script written by Satyananda Saraswati in his book Meditations from the Tantras
Preparation for Yoga Nidra
Please get ready for yoga nidra, please get ready for yoga nidra. Adjust your bed sheets, your bed, as best as you can and be sure that you will be able to practice yoga nidra for the whole period without any physical discomfort.
Adjust everything, your body position, pillow and the rest.
You can make suitable movements now, but once you have adjusted yourself finally until yoga nidra is over the body should not move. No movement then, no physical movement of any kind.
Become absolutely motionless, adjust yourself finally.
Concentrate on the physical body, concentrate on the physical body, concentrate on your physical being as a whole.
Be aware of the existence of the physical body, be aware of the existence of your physical body.
Develop awareness of the whole body from top to toe.
Develop awareness of your whole physical body from top to toe.
Your whole body, your whole body, your whole body should be the object of your awareness. You are aware of the whole body, the physical being from top to toe, not merely awareness of legs or arms or trunk or chest or head, but awareness of the whole body, awareness of the body as a whole, complete and constant awareness of the whole body.
Be aware that you are going to practice yoga nidra and say mentally ‘I am aware, I am going to practice yoga nidra; I am aware, I am going to practice yoga Nidra.’
Go on thinking like this and be sure you are aware you are going to practice yoga nidra.
This should be the form of your awareness now.
Yoga Nidra Relaxation
Relax your body mentally, relax mentally, relax your mind, your whole personality should be relaxed by breathing normally and concentrating on the normal breath in the nostrils on the basis of nadi shodhana.
Breathing through alternate nostrils, normal breathing through alternate nostrils. Breathe in through the left nostril and breathe out through the right, and again breathe in through the right and breathe out through the left. Relax your breathing, normal breathing, breathe with concentration.
Go on practicing psychic breathing, and this is how your whole personality will feel completely relaxed, not only the physical body, not merely the thinking process, but complete relaxation of body, senses, breathing, mind, awareness will take place through this practice.
Your mind, your consciousness, should go in and out with the help of the breath. When you are able to relax completely through this practice, you will find a change in your physical consciousness and also a great change in your mental awareness.
Any time if you breathe this way and if you concentrate on this normal breath through alternate nostrils, your whole personality will undergo a process of relaxation.
Please check yourself and be sure that you are fully awake; that you are listening to me and that you are not sleeping.
Yoga Nidra Resolve/Sankalpa
Your Sankalpa, the resolution should be simple, short, in clear Language, with frank expression, with faith. Resolves made before and after yoga nidra are sure to become a truth and reality in your life. Anything in life can fail but not the resolve made before and after yoga nidra. The same resolve, in the same language, with the same understanding, and with the same background, must be repeated day after day.
In the beginning and at the end of yoga nidra; kindly remember to repeat the same resolution at the end of the process also, before you open the eye and come out of yoga nidra.
The resolve, the Sankalpa, is repeated three times at the beginning and three times in the end. Go on repeating, go on, go on repeating.

Become aware of a sacrificial fire, the smoke arising from the fire, the smell of incense, the fragrance of flowers.
Become aware of yourself, find out and question yourself.
‘Am I aware of myself, am I asleep? am l attuned to Swamiji?’
Look at your body, in parts and as a whole, see your right thumb, second finger, third finger, fourth finger, fifth finger, palm, wrist, elbow, shoulder, armpit, waist, hip, hamstring, thigh, knee, calf, ankle, heel, sole, right toes, one, two, three, four, five, see your left thumb, second finger, third finger, fourth finger, fifth finger, palm, wrist, elbow, shoulder, armpit, waist, hip, hamstring, thigh, calf, knee, ankle, heel, sole, left toes, one, two, three, four, five.
See your whole body from the top, see your body from the top, your face, your nose, your eyes, your eyebrows, your head, your teeth, your body, up and down, as clearly as I see it, try to see your body by being outside of it.
Now look to your senses, five karma indriyas, and five jnana indriyas; the karma indriyas or senses of action are right hand, left hand, right foot, left foot, tongue which speaks, reproductory and excretory organs.
Now for the jnana indriyas or the senses of knowledge, the right eye, left eye, right ear, left ear, nose, tongue which tastes, skin all over the body.
Now become aware of your mind, now become aware of your mind, the mind by which you know, become aware of the faculty of awareness, become aware of the faculty of awareness.
Become aware of yourself, become aware of yourself, become aware of yourself.
Develop the awareness that you are practicing yoga nidra, become aware that you are practicing yoga nidra.
Look within yourself. look within yourself and become aware of the existence of prana in your body, in the form of heat and all round movement.
Again, look within and become aware of the existence of consciousness, through which you are practicing yoga nidra, again look within and become aware of the existence of your consciousness, by which you that you are practicing yoga nidra.
Look within your body and become aware of the golden egg in the center of your brain, and look within your body and become aware of the golden egg in the center of your brain, a golden egg, very small, very small, very small, and that is the seat of the highest consciousness in man.
Golden egg, very very small in size, and that is the seat of the Supreme consciousness, highest consciousness, the center of the consciousness
A golden egg, not big, but small, and that is the seat of supreme consciousness in man.
Try to become your own witness, try to become your own witness, try to become your own witness.
Say now unto you: ‘I am not this body, I am not these senses, I am not this mind, I am not this prana, I am not these thoughts, I am not this awareness, I am not this awareness, I am not this body, l am not heaviness, I am not pain, I am not cold, I am not mind, I am not karma, this body, the senses, the mind, the awareness, the prana, the feeling, experiences, and everything that is physical, mental, psychic, unconscious, I am not. Immortal Self I am.’
Again and again go into your brain, find out that golden egg in you, and try to see yourself in that. And again and again try to go into your brain, look within into the golden egg and try to identify yourself with it. Within that golden egg, try to find out that golden egg in you, and try to see yourself like that, and say again unto yourself:
‘Beyond the mind, body, senses, the karma, nature, and everything that is physical, mental, psychic, unconscious, I am in the form of this golden egg’.
Become aware of your physical body, try to see your physical body by being outside of it.
Try to see your physical body as if you are seeing it from outside.
Go into your brain, go within, in the center of your brain, and try to concentrate on and try to become aware of a golden egg, bright golden egg, the cosmic consciousness in you.
And try to locate the golden egg in the center of yourself, try to become aware of it, and say unto your mind, ‘I am that’.
Now repeat your resolve three times.
